2022-2023 Scholarships Awarded

13th Annual Donor/Scholar Recognition connects students and scholarship donors

(November 2022) The Gateway Community College Foundation awarded 130 scholarships and fellowships to 122 deserving Gateway students for the 2022-2023 academic year, thanks to generous support of caring individuals and companies throughout Greater New Haven and beyond.

Many students and donors met and shared their stories in person in two moving and meaningful afternoons, the 13th Annual Donor/Scholar Recognition.

Scholarship awards, which reflect $86,375, included:

· 72 general scholarships (tuition, books, or related academic expenses)

· 14 fellowships (broader, long-term support)

· 44 Technology Awards (laptops)

GCC Foundation Board member Ruby Melton co-chaired the Scholarship Committee with her Board colleague, Dr. Wilson Luna, GCC’s retired Dean of Student Services. 52 volunteers read, reviewed, and deliberated on how best to rank 296 applications.

“This is powerful, emotional, hard work,” she said, “but Gateway students are an inspiration. Many of them balance study and work to achieve their academic and career goals. They are making their lives, their families’ lives, and our communities better.”

Did you know? You can endow a scholarship in perpetuity for $10,000, or fund a scholarship for as little as $250! That may not sound like a lot, but it could make a huge difference to Gateway students struggling to make ends meet while pursuing their educational dreams.
