Driven by Family, Focused on Change: Lexi Robison’s Path Through Engineering at Gateway

Lexi Robison’s journey into engineering at Gateway Community College started with a heartfelt mission close to home. Hailing from Seymour, CT, her story intertwines ambition with a deep-rooted commitment to innovation and her community.

Her path to Gateway wasn’t just about academics; it was about purpose and family. “When my grandmother’s health deteriorated during my time away at another college, I realized I needed to be closer,” Lexi recalls. Gateway provided the proximity, affordability, and support she needed to focus on both her studies and her family.

Surprised by Gateway’s advanced facilities and supportive faculty, Lexi quickly found herself immersed in a vibrant academic community. “My electronics professor not only taught me technical skills but also guided me toward scholarships,” she reflects gratefully. And while she initially struggled to make connections, she soon found a supportive network of peers and mentors at Gateway.

Engineering has always been Lexi’s passion, a curiosity nurtured since childhood. “I remember spending weeks with my grandfather, dismantling an old computer and learning about its components,” she shares with a smile. This early fascination with “how things work” laid the foundation for her pursuit of engineering, driven by a desire to innovate and improve lives.

Her hands-on experiences in Gateway’s electrical labs and being with like-minded peers are some of her most cherished moments. But this journey has had its challenges, as Lexi has balanced work with her rigorous studies. “I pay for my schooling, so I work to support it. I used to work two days a week, but the scholarship gave me the chance to take a day off to focus on school. Imagine if I didn’t have to work? I could take four more classes,” Lexi says. “The scholarship freed up my schedule, allowing me to attend events like the American Society for Engineering Education conference—opportunities I couldn’t have taken before.”

Lexi’s vision extends far beyond academia. Inspired by her grandmother’s experience with Alzheimer’s, she hopes to one day work in biomedical engineering, particularly in prosthetics and assistive technologies. “Engineering isn’t just about building things; it’s about enhancing lives,” she passionately explains. Outside her studies, she’s involved in initiatives like Career Closet, which provides business attire for students, ensuring they feel confident stepping into their futures. “My journey at Gateway isn’t just about earning a degree; it’s about using engineering to create positive change.”
