Dear Gateway Foundation Supporters,

It is more important than ever that CT State Community College Gateway students have the resources they need to succeed. That’s why we are excited to share with you the impactful work being done through the Gateway Community College Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.

Technology: A Gateway to Success

In today’s digital age, access to technology is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. Because laptops play a vital role in Gateway students’ academic journey the Foundation solicits donations to purchase and award free laptops to students in need.

Bridging the Digital Divide

With the generous support of donors like you, in the 2023/24 academic year, we’ve been able to allocate funds to two critical initiatives:

1. Library Laptop Loan Program: The Gateway Foundation provides laptops to our library’s computer lending program. Students can borrow laptops for either the fall or spring semester. Students also have the option to renew their borrowing term. During the summer, laptops are returned for maintenance. These devices are crucial for students who need temporary solutions due to financial need, accidental forgetfulness, or desktop limitations. High demand and limited supply sometimes result in waitlists, impacting students’ accessibility.

2. Scholarship-Granted Laptops: For students with financial need, receiving a scholarship-granted laptop can make all the difference. The Foundation awards laptops through an application process. Students must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. By providing students with their own laptops, your donations empower them to overcome barriers and thrive in their studies.

Student Success Stories

Allow me to introduce you to two remarkable Gateway students whose lives have been positively impacted by your support:

– Terence Okwuosa [Graphic Design, Spring’25]– The Laptop Scholarship transformed my academic and creative journey. As a graphic design student, it provided me with the essential tools to excel in my coursework and beyond. The laptop’s portability and access to professional software allowed me to explore photography, music production, and graphic design without limits.

This support really helped me through a challenging time for me where I was dealing with personal recovery and financial hardship. It enabled me to balance my roles as a student worker, art club president, and entrepreneur, all while contributing to my community.

Your contributions make a real difference. They equip students like me with the means to succeed and inspire us to give back. Thank you for your invaluable support.

– Cristian Montanez [Political Science, Spring’24]– Borrowing a computer from the Laptop Loan Program from the CT State Gateway library was a pivotal moment for me. It became a daily reminder to stay diligent with my coursework. The school laptop, equipped with necessary software and cloud access, allowed me to work seamlessly from any location. Financially, the thought of purchasing a laptop for myself was just not immediately possible. I would have to save up for a while to afford one. This program really was the difference in my ability to successfully make it through school. The scholarships I’ve also received have alleviated that heavy burden, enabling me to excel academically. These scholarships and the Laptop Loan Program have not only supported my education but also affirmed my potential, providing a sense of achievement and knowing that people out there believe in me.

The Impact of Your Support

Your contributions to the Gateway Foundation have a direct and tangible impact on Gateway students’ lives. By providing access to technology, you’re not just giving them a laptop—you’re giving them the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Whether it’s attending virtual lectures, completing assignments, or conducting research online, these laptops are essential for our students’ academic success.

Please Give to Make a Difference

In this increasingly digital age, the need for laptops is critical. The cost for each library loaned laptop is slightly more than $1,000. These laptops are sturdy, pre-loaded with necessary software, and protected against hackers and malign use by Gateway’s IT department. Your donation, no matter the size, can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.

Thank You

On behalf of the Gateway Foundation and our students, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your ongoing support. Your generosity is changing lives and shaping futures. Together, we’re making a difference.

Warm regards,

Thomas Beirne, III

Gateway Community College Foundation Chair
