How Legacy Gifts Transform the Lives of CT State Community College Gateway Students

As the year draws to a close, many in our community reflect on the people, values, and experiences that shaped their lives. For some, this season becomes an opportunity to honor those memories in a way that continues to lift others. At the Gateway Community College Foundation, we are privileged to witness how thoughtful giving, whether through IRA charitable rollovers, estate plans, or the creation of endowed scholarships, builds a legacy that endures for generations.
A Legacy Rooted in Leadership: The Norman H. Wuestefeld Scholarship
The Foundation is honored to steward the Norman H. Wuestefeld Scholarship, a lasting tribute to a remarkable leader in transportation engineering. The endowed scholarship recognized Norman’s steadfast commitment to his profession and his community. This heartfelt contribution in his honor ensured that his legacy would continue to guide and uplift students long after his passing.
Norman’s wife, Paula, and their children later extended that legacy with a $30,000 gift, inspired by the values that shaped his extraordinary life. Today, the scholarship provides crucial support to students pursuing Engineering Technology, Engineering Science, and Technology Studies at CT State Community College Gateway.
A devoted community servant, Norman served on numerous professional and civic organizations including the Gateway Community College Foundation, where he was a valued board member. His influence can still be felt across the region and the nation through the many transportation projects he helped shape.
Recently, Norman’s children reaffirmed their commitment to honoring their father’s memory. After much thoughtful discussion, they have chosen to continue building the endowed fund with annual contributions until it reaches a level that will sustainably award a $1,500 scholarship each year. Their dedication is a powerful reminder of how one family’s love and shared purpose can open doors for future generations.
Carrying Forward a Mother’s Story: The Ana Lanaro Memorial Scholarship
Legacy giving also takes shape in other meaningful ways. Retired Gateway faculty member Anita Ellis chose to honor her mother, Ana Lanaro, by including the Gateway Community College Foundation as a beneficiary in her estate.
Ana emigrated from Argentina as a young child and learned English under challenging circumstances. Her resilience, determination, and belief in the power of education shaped Anita’s own path and ultimately inspired the creation of the Ana Lanaro Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Anita’s bequest will support students for whom English is not their first language, helping them overcome barriers similar to those her mother once faced.
Gifts like Anita’s speak deeply to the heart of Gateway: a place where opportunity is created, where students rise through adversity, and where one generation can meaningfully uplift the next.
Why Legacy Giving Matters Now
More students than ever rely on scholarship support to continue their education. Year-end charitable giving—especially through IRA charitable rollovers or planned gifts—provides critical stability for the Foundation’s work.
These gifts allow donors to:
- Ensure their values live on in the lives of students
- Create or strengthen endowed scholarships that thrive in perpetuity
- Make tax-efficient contributions directly from their IRA
- Honor a loved one with a legacy that continues to grow year after year
For many donors, this type of giving is one of the most meaningful decisions they ever make.
Your Legacy Can Begin Today
If you have been inspired by the Wuestefeld family or by Anita Ellis’s commitment to her mother’s memory, you may find that this is the right moment to consider how your own legacy could shape the future of CT State Gateway students.
Whether through:
- A qualified charitable distribution from your IRA,
- A provision in your estate plans, or
- The creation of a named endowed scholarship,
your generosity will provide life-changing educational opportunities for students who are working hard to build brighter futures.
