Nuha’s Journey: From Hardship to Empowerment

When Nuha Ibrahim arrived in the U.S. in 2008, she dreamed of building a new life—a life full of opportunities, purpose, and promise. But just one semester into college, her dreams were put on hold. The weight of high tuition costs forced her to step away, leaving behind not just her education but a piece of herself.

Life carried on, though not without struggle. Nuha became a wife and mother, raising her two sons far from family, familiarity, or support. For six long years, she navigated isolation and uncertainty, unsure of when or how her personal ambition would fit into the picture. Yet even in her hardest days, Nuha held on to the quiet, unwavering hope that she could still find her way forward.

Nuha gave an inspirational keynote at this year’s Hall of Fame and reminded us of the power of determination and community support. Every dollar you donate to the Gateway Community College Foundation helps students like Nuha achieve their dreams and make an impact.

It was her husband who gave her the final push to return to school. He encouraged her to start fresh at CT State Community College Gateway. Nuha began her journey as a social services major, driven by a passion to help others. But her work with immigrant and refugee women whose struggles mirrored her own sparked something deeper. “I saw myself in them,” she shared. “I knew I had to help them find their way because I had walked that same path.”

“These women deserve more than just a job—they deserve a chance to live fully,” she said.

Now that she works at Havenly as an employment specialist, Nuha is inspired to take her studies even further. She is completing her transfer pathway at Gateway and will transer to a four-year institution to study criminal justice or social work.

Balancing motherhood, full-time work, and her studies has stretched Nuha to her limits. “Some days, it feels impossible,” she admits. “But when I look at my three boys, I know I’m showing them something important—that we keep going, no matter how hard it gets.”

“I’m not just doing this for me,” she said. “I’m doing this for my children and for every woman who deserves the chance to live fully.”

Nuha dreams of taking her mission to the global stage—working with an organization like the United Nations to advocate for women.

“I want to be their voice,” she says, eyes full of determination. “To fight for their futures, the way I fought for mine.”

The scholarship Nuha received through the Gateway Community College Foundation has been more than financial support—it has been a lifeline. “This scholarship lifted a weight I didn’t realize I was carrying,” she said. “It gave me the chance to keep moving forward when I didn’t think I could.”

Looking back, Nuha smiles at the sleepless nights, the sacrifices, and the struggles that shaped her journey. “It’s been hard,” she admits. “But I wouldn’t change it. Because in the struggle, I found my purpose. And now, I can help others find theirs.”
