Ruby Melton Named Vice Chair of Gateway Foundation, Championing Equity and Opportunity

CT State Community College Gateway is proud to announce that Ruby Melton has been appointed as the new Vice Chair of the Gateway Community College Foundation. A dedicated leader with a distinguished career in maritime and international law, Ruby brings a wealth of experience, passion, and vision to this role.

Having served on the Foundation’s Executive Committee and co-chaired both the Scholarship and Nominating & Governance Committees, Ruby has played an instrumental role in supporting student success. Her commitment to mentorship and advocacy has already made a lasting impact on Gateway and the Greater New Haven community.

A Legacy of Leadership and Equity

Ruby’s leadership extends beyond the Foundation. On January 23, 2025, Gateway celebrated the ribbon-cutting of the Melton McAvay Center for Equity and Social Justice, a transformative space designed to foster inclusion, equity, and community connection. This milestone—made possible by Ruby and her wife, Gail McAvay—reflects their deep commitment to addressing inequities and creating meaningful change.

The grand opening welcomed faculty, staff, students, and community leaders.

The event also introduced the Center’s Four Pillars:

  • Dreamers, Immigrants & Refugees

Following the ribbon-cutting, attendees explored the state-of-the-art space, designed as a hub for collaboration, learning, and advocacy. The Center stands as a testament to Ruby and Gail’s vision for a more inclusive and equitable future—one where all students feel supported in their academic and personal journeys.
