Supporting Students Beyond the Classroom Through FESP

For many community college students, getting accepted is only the beginning. Balancing work, family responsibilities, finances, and academics can make staying in school the hardest part of the journey. At CT State Gateway, the Family Economic Security Program (FESP) was created to help students overcome those barriers and reach graduation day.

This year, Gateway celebrated another cohort of FESP students crossing the commencement stage, a milestone that reflects the impact of consistent, personalized support. Through academic coaching, financial guidance, career development, networking opportunities, and family-centered programming, FESP helps students navigate the challenges that often stand between them and a degree.

Since its launch, the grant-funded program has supported dozens of students each semester, reinforcing Gateway’s commitment to student persistence, equity, and long-term success. For many participants, FESP represents more than a program, it represents the support system that helped make graduation possible.
