The Care That Inspired a Calling: Christie Jeanty’s Story

Christie Jeanty always thought about working in health care, but it took some medical complications of her own to discover diagnostic medical sonography. was a “perfect fit” for her. “I wanted a fulfilling career that had a positive impact on people’s lives,” she recalled. “The sonographers I had were amazing.”

Sonography uses imaging equipment and soundwaves to form scans of the body known as ultrasounds. Since ultrasound is a noninvasive way to visualize internal organs, it’s often the first imaging test performed when disease is detected. Diagnostic medical sonographers acquire and analyze those sonographic images, which often help doctors narrow down patients’ diagnoses and ensure they quickly get the care they need.

According to Christie, diagnostic medical sonographers do everything from helping expectant mothers to capturing ultrasound images that lead to a lifesaving treatment. The $1,000 Yale-New Haven Health Scholarship will be a huge help to Christie, who has worked hard to earn her impressive 3.96 GPA.

“I’m in an intensive program,” she explained. “I spend most of my time either going to classes, attending clinical assignments, or studying.” She also works part time at Stamford Hospital to support herself, which will make her scholarship especially helpful in her educational journey.

“This will lower my out-of-pocket expenses and the hours I’m working,” Christie said. “I’ll be able to focus more on academics.” She also sees it as a way achieve her goals. “It motivates me to work even harder to excel and achieve a career I’m proud of.”
