Valerie’s Path: From Passion to Profession in Automotive Technology

Valerie’s journey began with a love for cars that stretched back to her childhood. Growing up around car culture, her interest in automotive engineering was sparked by her brothers, who would take her to car shows, including her favorite—the New York Auto Show. Her brother’s passion for working on his own car also fueled her curiosity, and she began to see a future for herself in the automotive field.
When the time came to pursue higher education, Valerie chose Gateway Community College for its proximity and affordability. She didn’t want the traditional dorm experience; instead, she sought the flexibility to work and study without the heavy financial burden of a four-year institution. Gateway’s Honda PACT program caught her eye, offering a direct path into the automotive industry.
One of the defining moments of her time in the program was being the only woman in her class. Rather than feeling out of place, Valerie found herself in an inclusive environment where her peers and instructors alike supported her growth. She thrived, not just because of her skills, but because of the positive, encouraging atmosphere that surrounded her.
The hands-on experience she gained through internships was invaluable. As a second-year student, these internships functioned as part-time jobs, giving her real-world experience that solidified her knowledge and prepared her for a successful career. Valerie credits the program’s combination of classroom theory and practical application for her seamless entry into the automotive industry.
Through the Gateway Community College Foundation, Valerie received a scholarship that provided her with an essential tool: a fully-equipped toolbox. This gift removed one of the biggest financial barriers facing new automotive technicians, enabling her to enter the workforce ready and confident.
After graduation, Valerie continued to stay connected with her instructors, who still check in on her progress and offer guidance. Reflecting on her experience, she expresses deep gratitude for the supportive community she found at Gateway. “I was really fortunate to work and study with amazing classmates and instructors,” she says. “They didn’t treat me any differently because I was a girl—they just wanted to see me succeed.”
Now working in the field, Valerie not only uses her skills professionally but also helps her family with car repairs, saving them the cost of a mechanic. “It’s rewarding to be able to give back to my family in that way,” she shares.
