Students Turn Creativity Into Scholarships Through Collaborative Cookbook Project

What began as a classroom collaboration has grown into a student-led initiative supporting both professional development and student scholarships at CT State Gateway.
This spring semester, students from the Culinary Club and the Graphic Design Capstone class released The Sweet-quel, the second edition in a collaborative cookbook series featuring student-created recipes and original graphic design work. The project gives students the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting while contributing to something larger than themselves.
The cookbook initiative has already made a meaningful impact across campus. The first publication, Sweeter by the Dozen, sold 267 copies, funding three $500 scholarships while also providing royalties to student contributors. With the release of The Sweet-quel, students are continuing that momentum, with a portion of proceeds supporting future Gateway Community College Foundation scholarships.
Beyond the recipes themselves, the project reflects the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning. Culinary students gain experience developing and presenting original recipes, while graphic design students manage branding, layout, and publication design. Together, the project demonstrates how student talent and creativity can directly support the success of future students.
